Description
This is a home for malnourished and abandoned children in
Guatemala from 0 till 18 years old. They have taken the responsibility
of raising and educating an average of 150-220 children. They
are working with local staff and with the help of volunteers
from all over the world. The project is solely supported by
private contributions.
Activities
Except for working with the children, it is possible to work
in a backpacker's hostel and in a shop. The money earned with
both of these projects is being used for the children. If
you choose to work with the children, you can do the following:
teaching, arts and crafts, works with special need children
etc. If you have followed a special education for example
a social worker, engineering, gardening etc, you are more
than welcome too.
Minimum: 4 weeks
Spanish: Intermediate, you will be speaking English
with the children too, so they are being raised bilingual.
Schedule: You will be working 7 days a week, 8 hours
a day, according to a schedule that has been made by the volunteer
co-ordinator. After three weeks of working you have one week
off.
Capacity: Maximum 25 volunteers.
Location
Rio Dulce is located in the eastern part of Guatemala, about
8 hours drive from Antigua. The project is on a strip of land
that can only be reached by boot. So you can not come and
go as you wish! Due to this location the climate can be very
hot and humid! Accommodation is in a house in the same area
as the project where you share rooms with other volunteers.
